The Masterclass will combine foundational knowledge with policy and institutional perspectives. It will examine AI from an African perspective, Kenya’s evolving AI governance landscape, applicable regulatory approaches and the implications of AI for data governance, privacy, human rights, cybersecurity, information integrity, procurement and institutional accountability. By the end of the Masterclass, participants should be able to:

  1. Explain foundational AI concepts and distinguish between major forms and applications of AI.

  2. Identify opportunities and risks associated with the use of AI within parliamentary and public-sector institutions.

  3. Understand Kenya’s AI governance landscape within the wider East African, African and global contexts.

  4. Assess the Senate’s legislative and institutional responsibilities regarding AI governance.

  5. Identify data governance, privacy, human rights, cybersecurity and information-integrity issues associated with AI.

  6. Understand the underlying risks of using AI and other technologies, and build knowledge of safety and security measures to ensure responsible and ethical AI use.
